DCN-41: “Data from: Eulerian videography technology improves classification of sleep architecture in primates”, an ecology video dataset, was submitted to the DCN by Erin Clary and curated by Jennifer Darragh.

This was a high quality dataset and Jen’s only recommendation was that the author consider transforming to a more preservation-friendly format. The author did not follow up on Jen’s recommendation, and no additional curation actions were taken.

DCN-45: “Data from: Trans-National Conservation and Infrastructure Development in The Heart of Borneo”, an earth and environmental sciences geospatial dataset, was submitted to the DCN by Erin Clary and curated by Melinda Kernik.

Melinda had several recommendations for ways the data author could improve this dataset, including: outlining the technical workflow for generating the analysis layers included in the dataset, defining variables, providing source information for input layer data, and generally clarifying documentation for better readability and comprehension.

Unfortunately, the data author did not follow up on any of Melinda’s recommendations and no further curation actions were taken.

DCN-48: “Data from: Palaeobiogeography and evolutionary patterns of the larger foraminifer Borelis de Montfort (Borelidae)”, an earth science 3D image dataset, was submitted to the DCN by Erin Clary and curated by Xuying Xin.

Although initially a high quality dataset, Xuying had a few recommendations for improving this dataset, including adding reference features and further modifying the images for better usability. As a result, major curation actions (files updated/added, metadata edited/added) were taken.

DCN-64/65: “SNP data of 556 isolates of the wheat leaf rust fungus, Puccinia triticina from 11 world-wide regions”, a plant sciences code and genomic dataset, was submitted to the DCN by Lisa Johnston and curated by Sarah Wright and Ashley Hetrick.

Despite generally being a good quality dataset, Sarah and Ashley had several recommendations for the data author, including: creating documentation in the form of a README file, renaming some files according to best practices, and correcting a minor error in the code.

The data authors accepted all of Sarah and Ashley’s recommendations and as a result major curation actions (files updated/added, metadata edited/added) were taken.

The purpose of this Dataset Digest series of blog posts is to keep our followers informed and up to date on the curation activities of the DCN! These weekly updates will summarize datasets that have been curated by the network. Once a dataset is “finalized” (curation is complete, any necessary updates or changes have been made, and the dataset has been made publicly available via the local partner repository) we add it to our website and include it in our weekly digest. Thank you for following our progress!
