In October 2023, the DCN hosted two workshops– which are our favorite chances to get to know data curators around the US!

A key takeaway from both workshops, and really all of our workshops, is that we sincerely cherish the opportunity to be in community with our fellow data curators, information professionals, and, really, data nerds. Thanks to all of our instructors for fostering an environment where this can flourish, and to all of our attendees for showing up as their most authentic selves.

October 17-18: Specialized Data Curation Pilot Workshop

As part of the IMLS-funded “Specialized Data Curation Cohorts” effort, curriculum development teams and data curators from across the United States gathered at Duke University for a pilot workshop. This workshop included four half-day sessions on curating Geospatial data, Code, Scientific Images, and Simulation data. Throughout the workshop, project design team members gathered feedback from attendees which will be used to improve curricula prior to distribution. You can read more about the project or contact PI Sophia Lafferty-Hess for more information.

October 23-24: Data Curation Fundamentals

The University of New Mexico, as our first Ambassador member, hosted a Data Curation Fundamentals workshop in Albuquerque, New Mexico. DCN instructors Sophia Lafferty-Hess and Rachel Woodbrook co-taught with Jon Wheeler to offer data curation fundamentals to the US Southwest. This was an adaptation of our standard training– but our instructors focused more on the foundational components of data curation. While these instructors also allowed space for those with more advanced skills, we are looking forward to exploring how we might continue refining a “Foundational” workshop in the future.

While we are already looking for a reason to be back in the US Southwest, at the moment we don’t have any workshops scheduled– but stay tuned for updates by subscribing to the DCN Newsletter, or follow us on our new LinkedIn Page!
