We are pleased to announce that the Data Curation Network was once again selected as a site host for the National Center for Data Services (NCDS) Data Services Internship. This summer, three interns from the program, Jodecy Guerra, Maria Lee, and Rachel Priesman Marquez, were placed at the DCN to learn more about data librarian work, gain practical experience in the field, work with experienced mentors, and collaborate on projects they can present at conferences in the LIS field. Last year two primers and a resource guide were developed as a result of DCN intern efforts.

These internships are funded with Federal funds from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).* Read more about the NCDS Internship Program and our introductions from last year.

Mentor Seth Erickson, UCSB, will provide guidance and lend his expertise to interns as they collaboratively develop a Git primer specific for the needs of data curators.

Meet the interns!

Jodecy Guerra

Institution and Program

University of Southern California, Masters of Management in Library and Information Science

What are you most interested in learning while at the DCN?

I am interested to learn more about data curation and how curators maintain data to make it findable, accessible, and reusable years down the line. It had never occurred to me that data must be maintained in order to be operable in the future.

What has been your favorite class or topic in your graduate program (so far)?

My favorite topic in my grad program so far is learning more about inclusion and accessibility in most of my classes. In every class I have taken, we have been giving the liberty to explore our own research topics and I have looked at different variations of inclusion and accessibility in terms of students who have disabilities.

Is there a summertime activity you particularly enjoy?

Now that the sun is out and shining, I enjoy being outdoors in nature and hiking with my friends. The best part of being in Southern California is that there are trails all around, and many new trails I have yet to explore. So far, my favorite one is the Etiwanda Falls Trail in Rancho Cucamonga.

What are you most interested in learning while at the DCN?

I’m really interested in learning more about the technical workflows involved in data curation. Also, I am really encouraged by the collaborative nature of the DCN and feel excited to learn more about how DCN members create a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment, where meaningful resource and knowledge sharing takes place.

What has been your favorite class or topic in your graduate program (so far)?

I took an Information Policy class last spring that framed up data and information as part of socio-technical systems. It was a really fascinating survey of different information policy issues including copyright, data sovereignty, and open government practices. The class definitely got my wheels spinning about the policies that govern research data and institutional repositories!

Is there a summertime activity you particularly enjoy?

I love to ride my bike and hope to bike from Boston to Walden Pond this summer!

Rachel Priesman Marquez

Institution & Program

UNC Chapel Hill, MSLS

What are you most interested in learning while at the DCN?

Beyond my excitement to work with all the amazing NCDS interns and the wonderful people at the DCN, I’m excited to learn more about Git and GitHub and how people in our field are communicating and collaborating.

What has been your favorite class or topic in your graduate program (so far)?

My favorite class so far has been research. I’ve learned so much about the conventions of conducting research in our field, the different types of research, and their affordances and constraints. That course not only expanded my knowledge about research generally but has also provided me with the skills to better discern the quality of a study.

Is there a summertime activity you particularly enjoy?

By far my favorite summer activities are bike riding, picnicking, and swimming. Preferably all in the same day and in that exact order!

Be sure to say hi to Jodecy, Maria, and Rachel this summer on Slack!

Please contact Shawna Taylor with any questions about the internship program at: staylor@arl.org.

Thank you again to the NCDS for partnering with the DCN on this internship program, as we appreciate this opportunity to learn and grow together.
