We’re excited to share three new data curation primers released by the Data Curation Network, focusing on critical formats and approaches in scientific and cultural data management: FITS (Flexible Image Transport System), TIFF (Tagged Image File Format), and Linked Data.

FITS: The Astronomical Data Standard

The FITS primer, developed by Lubov McKone, Robyn DeRocchis, and Rebecca Orozco, provides comprehensive guidance on handling astronomical data files. While FITS was originally developed in the 1970s for astronomy, it has evolved into a versatile format that can store multiple types of scientific data, from simple images to complex multi-dimensional data cubes. The primer covers essential aspects like HDU (Header Data Unit) structure, metadata requirements, and preservation best practices.

TIFF: More Than Just Images

Leah Everitt, Jen Ferguson, and Emily Simpson’s TIFF primer explores this widely-used image format’s capabilities and challenges. While many know TIFF as a high-quality image format, it’s particularly valuable in archival contexts due to its relatively lossless nature and support for extensive metadata. The primer addresses key preservation issues like file size limitations, metadata extraction, and the creation of access copies.

Linked Data: Connecting Knowledge

The Linked Data primer, authored by Alexandra Provo, Halle Burns, Michele Lamorte, and Chenyue Jiao, is centered on the principles and practices of connecting structured data across the web. It provides crucial guidance for data professionals working with semantic data, knowledge graphs, and ontologies. The primer emphasizes practical aspects of curating Linked Data, including FAIR principles implementation and preservation strategies for URI persistence.

Practical Tools for Data Curators

Each primer includes:

  • Detailed format specifications and standards
  • Key questions for curation review
  • Preservation recommendations
  • FAIR principles implementation guidance
  • Practical software tools and resources
  • A comprehensive CURATE(D) checklist

These primers represent valuable additions to the data curator’s toolkit, especially as research data becomes increasingly complex and interconnected. They’re available now through the Data Curation Network’s GitHub repository, offering essential guidance for data professionals working to preserve and maintain access to diverse research outputs.
