DCN-31: Mapping Tasmania’s cultural landscapes: using habitat suitability modelling of archaeological sites as a landscape history tool, an archaeological GIS dataset, was submitted by Erin Clary for Dryad and curated for the DCN by Melinda Kernik.

Erin submitted this dataset to take advantage of the network’s GIS expertise, and noted that a DCN expert in this area would be able to make specific recommendations to the data author.

Melinda concluded that the dataset would benefit from additional documentation to aid in later interpretation of the data. Specifically, Melinda recommended the data author provide information about how the data files were created, descriptions of the variables used in the analysis, information about the tools used in the analysis, and original sources for the raw data.

Due to Melinda’s expertise, major curation actions were taken (files updated/added, metadata edited/added) – the data author accepted Melinda’s recommendations and provided all of the requested documentation.

The purpose of this Dataset Digest series of blog posts is to keep our followers informed and up to date on the curation activities of the DCN! These weekly updates will summarize datasets that have been curated by the network. Once a dataset is “finalized” (curation is complete, any necessary updates or changes have been made, and the dataset has been made publicly available via the local partner repository) we add it to our website and include it in our weekly digest. Thank you for following our progress!
